- Poetry and poems: describe a wide variety of spoken and written forms,
   styles and patterns, and limitless subjects.

- Thus, it is not possible to make a single, comprehensive definition

- Origin: Greek word ‘poiema’ (something made or fashioned in words).

- The above meaning is applicable to both poetry and poems.

- Poet: person who writes or speaks poems


The nature of poetry

- Poems are imaginative works expressed in words that are used with
   utmost compressions, force and economy (unlike prose).

- Reading and understanding poetry should prompt us to re-examine,
   reinforce and reshape our ideas,  attitudes, feelings and our lives.


How poetry works


- Poems are often about subjects we have never experienced directly,
   never met the poet, never thought  about things in exactly the same way.

- The more effort we put to understand poetry, the greater will be our reward

- To recapture the experience of the poem, we need to understand
   the language, ideas, attitudes, and frames of reference that will
    make the poem comes alive.

How to read a poem

- Carefully, thoughtfully, sympathetically.

- Interact with the poem

- A poem employs language, imagery, rhythms, ideas, etc. The reader needs
   to open up his mind to the poet’s impact.

- No single technique for reading and appreciating poetry.

- Suggestion: read each poem more than once (aloud) and keep in mind the following:-

a. The title: always informative

b. The speaker: first person (persona: inside view) or 3rd. Person (omniscient: outside view)

c. The meanings of all words: familiar or unfamiliar

d. The poet’s setting and situation

e. The poem’s basic form and development

f. The poem’s subject and theme

EDU630 Assignment for the Cohort 3 students

EDU630 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: ASSIGNMENTS

This course does not have a final examination. Students are required to complete three assignments. Each assignment must be completed using font size 12, Arial / Times New Roman and double spacing. Attach a front cover which gives the details of your particular/s, assignment number, title, etc.

Assignment 1 (40%) 
a. Students are required to submit a reflective paper individually of about two and a half pages on their personal / practicum experience and understanding on their roles as a student teacher. Include a critique/suggestions on how to improve those roles (10%) (submission date: 31.1.2010)

b. In groups of three, write a report on the talk by three guest speakers in a seminar. (Total: 3 reports) Each report should be about four pages, covering:

(i). area or content of the talk,

(ii) critique / personal reflection

(10x3=30%)

Assignment 2 (30%) (Submission Date: 28.2.2010)

a. In groups of three, select an article on teaching and learning of English. Read and write a 10 page critical review of the article. The article can be obtained from written journals or from the internet. The article should be from the year 2005 onwards.

b. The critical review should include:

(i) An overview of the article (10%)

(ii) Your analysis on the strengths or weaknesses of the article (10%)

(iii) Your comments and suggestions (10%)

c. Attach the selected article with the write up. (Without the attachment, your critical review will be considered null and void).


Assignment 3 (30%) (First group to present: 21.2.2010)

a. In groups of three, select a topic given in the course outline, research and write an academic paper about ten pages on it. (10%)

b. Prepare a presentation for the class. The presentation should include brochures/short notes/etc. for the audience (20%).

Introduction to adeneducation

Hello,

This is my initial attempt to start my own blog. Friends, students and visitors are welcomed to give suggestions and ideas to improve this site.

This blog is meant as a platform for academic and educational discussion. NOTHING ELSE should tarnish the main purpose of this blog.

In general, this site may cover discussions pertaining to the teaching and learning of English. Specifically, it will provide input, reading texts and other materials of the subjects I am currently teaching.

From time to time, I may post my personal reflections and opinions from the point of view as an educator. All are welcomed to respond to these views.
